Pet Food Recall: March 2007

Dear pet owners:

Needless to say we've received a lot of calls lately about the pet foods recall that is making the news. The best link thus far I can give you for "straight from the horse's mouth" info is the Menu Foods Recall Information page. There you will find more links that list the foods that have been recalled. Please note that not all these foods have been documented as making pets ill. These lists encompass all foods made by the Menu Foods company in Emporia, Kansas, whose products have been implicated. In particular, the Iams pet foods site has a very nice explanation of what's going on as does a report from the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University (PDF file, requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). Most of these products are undergoing what's called a "Voluntary Recall" — in other words, they have been manufactured at the same plant, and the companies labeling them are pulling them off the shelves voluntarily to prevent your pets from becoming sick.

As I understand it thus far, the only food implicated have been cans or envelopes of some types of pet food. Dry food has not been found to be a problem.

I am happy to report that as of this writing we have had no sick pets at the clinic whose illnesses could be linked to the consumption of contaminated pet foods. I hope that continues to be so!

Dr. Steph
